FAQ: STUDENT HANDBOOK
Dancing at The Brass Barre is a place where a lot of people come together to have a great time! We want to create a fun and safe atmosphere where everyone can be comfortable and enjoy themselves. To that end we have put together some general rules of etiquette below.
NO SHOW & LATECOMER POLICY
What happens if I’m late for class?
We understand delays happen, but to ensure you’re adequately warmed up for class, please arrive no later than 10 minutes after the stated class time. This is to prevent any injuries that may occur if you are not properly warmed up.
What happens if I miss class?
Not to worry! If you miss one of your classes, you can drop in for a make-up on another day that has the same lesson. Alternatively, you can drop in for either a flexibility class (e.g. Flexy Legs) or a tricks class (e.g. Inverts)
For your safety, it is important that you make sure you do not put on moisturizer, tanning lotion or any oils prior to a class, as this will make the poles slippery. It also will leave them greasy & make them dangerous for other pole users. Be sure to arrive at least 10- 15min before the start of your class to register and to change into your workout attire.
How do I prepare before class?
Arrive 5 minutes before your stated class time to pick your pole and change into your pole wear so that you’re all ready to go once class starts. Make sure that you are not wearing moisturizer, tanning lotion or oils prior to class as this makes the pole slippery and dangerous for you to use as well as for other students.
What do I bring for pole class?
This differs from student to student, but a general item guide of class essentials includes:
- Water bottle
- Towel
- Grip/shaving gel
Additional items you may consider bringing:
- Knee pads (depending on the class type)
- Body wipes
- Deodorant/dry shampoo
- Plasters/hand tape
- Phone stand
What do I wear for class?
Pole:
A tank top and exercise shorts above the knee are compulsory as you will require skin contact with the pole. Wear something stretchy that you can move about freely for dancing too!
Chair:
Exercise attire that doesn’t hinder your movement works great for this. Wearing something sexy also helps get you in the mood for chair dancing.
Flex:
Leggings and a tank top or t-shirt are strongly recommended for comfort and hygiene, especially when using our studio yoga mats. Feel free to bring your own mat if you prefer!
Footwear:
You can choose to dance barefoot, in socks or wearing shoes designed specifically for pole dancing. Take note that those shoes are only to be worn inside the studio. No other shoes are allowed. Some pole shoe brands you can consider are Pleasers or Hella Heels, but do your research before purchasing too!
Accessories:
Please remove any metal such as rings, bangles or bracelets on your body before dancing as these items can hurt you and damage the pole.
What types of grip aid should I use?
For your hands, you can use pole grip such as Dry Hands or liquid chalk. Please DO NOT use iTac as it is incompatible with our brass poles and will damage them.
For your body, you can use a shaving gel, which is usually applied on your legs and other areas to get a better grip on the pole. Avoid any that are moisturising as it will negate this effect.
Can I film videos during class?
You can definitely film snippets of yourself during class. But if any other students or instructors are in your video, please ask their permission before posting it on social media. Alternatively, you can blur or block them out of your video if you intend to post it. Privacy and consent is important! Filming of class instructions are not allowed unless explicitly mentioned and always ask your instructors before you film them too.
If you miss a lesson, do not to worry, you can try to make it up!
Make-ups are a perk we offer our students where possible. If all classes are full, we cannot guarantee make-up slots will be available, so choose your courses wisely!
Please refer to the Term or Workshop pages under Schedule for the specific makeup policies
